St Laurence Restored takes an important step forward
October 28, 2026

Plans to repair and protect St Laurence Church in the heart of Stroud have reached an important milestone.
Following a successful Development Phase review with The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the St Laurence Restored project team is preparing to submit its Delivery Grant application in early November 2026. This marks a significant step forward in the plans to secure the future of the Grade II* listed church, which is currently on the Heritage at Risk Register.
The Delivery Grant has not yet been awarded, and a decision is expected in March 2027.
The journey began with the launch of St Laurence: The Future in October 2016. Since then, the commitment of the local community, volunteers and supporters has helped the Project progress, including through the disruption of the pandemic.
Community fundraising, Christmas Tree Festivals, concerts and other events helped fund the specialist advice needed to prepare the successful Development Grant application in May 2025. The subsequent grant from the Heritage Fund, made possible by National Lottery players, has enabled detailed investigations, specialist surveys and planning for the essential repairs, alongside work to develop activities that will help more people discover and enjoy the church’s heritage.
The plans bring together major repairs to the roof, rainwater goods, stonework and historic windows with opportunities to explore the building’s history and its place in Stroud.
These improvements will help protect St Laurence for future generations, ensuring it can continue to serve the town as a place of worship, quiet reflection, music, arts and community activity, as well as remaining an important part of Stroud’s historic townscape.
The Project has reached this stage through years of dedication, collaboration and community support. Further updates will be shared following submission of the Delivery Grant application and as plans progress.
